Italy to sell 30.1% of Alitalia


So the Italian government plans to sell 30.1% of its 49.9% stake in Alitalia. Assuming it insists that the block be purchased in one block it will trigger a takeover of the whole of the company.

Why is this different than the state selling its 49.9% block?

On the other hand, who in their right mind would want to buy Alitalia at any price?

Italy’s government said on Tuesday it intended to sell at least 30.1 per cent of Alitalia, forcing any company or consortium that buys the stake to make a full takeover bid for the loss-making airline.

No potential buyers have yet surfaced, but the heads of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI, two Italian banks which are in the process of merging, are due to meet on Wednesday to discuss a possible bid for Alitalia.
