When I'm sixty-four


In a society that celebrates youth, Karen Higginbottom discovers that negative attitudes toward olderemployees die hard

Do you assume that the oldest person in the office is the most ‘senior’? Do you manage people differently because of their age? Or do you think it is reasonable to employ people of similar ages to create a good team fit?

If the answer to some or all of these questions is ‘yes’, you’re not alone in your beliefs – but this attitude could now put employers at risk of a tribunal claim. On October 1, it became unlawful for an employer to discriminate according to age. The new laws prevent age criteria in recruitment, promotion and training, and also restrict the imposition of mandatory retirement before 65.

Arguably, BP chief executive Lord Browne, who recently confirmed he would not stay on beyond the company’s standard retirement age of 60, could use the legislation to scrap the mandatory policy.
