Executive pay issue forms part of much larger argument


About 800 heads of large corporations, it seems, were in Davos last week. It is of course an event custom-built to attract CEOs. But the way things are back home these days, it is a wonder so many of them had the nerve to leave the office.

Consider the evidence. In 2006, according to a study published last week by the PR company Weber Shandwick, 26 per cent of large-company CEOs in the UK departed, not all by choice. In Germany, it was 23 per cent.

Another survey last week by PR company Edelman asked people whether they trusted CEOs. Only 18 per cent in the UK, France and Germany said yes, as distinct from 28 per cent who trusted the average company employee.

Lest this be put down to mere envy, the sample was comprised of people in the top-income quartile in each country.
