Today the Institute of Directors (IoD) publishes a new report on migrant workers which finds that there is considerable agreement from business leaders that migrant workers provide a vital boost to the UK economy. Three-quarters of IoD members support the view that migrant workers make a significant positive contribution to the UK economy.
IoD members report that migrant workers significantly outperform the existing workforce across a whole range of measures including productivity, education & skills, work ethic, reliability and the amount of sick leave.
IoD members are very supportive of encouraging immigration into the UK, in order to alleviate skills shortages and widen the labour pool for employers. 65% of IoD members want to encourage immigration for this reason, whereas 22% do not.
By a ratio of almost two to one IoD members also support a policy of total freedom of movement of labour within the EU. 57 per cent of IoD members support such a policy, whilst 30 per cent are against.
