
Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane has defended Australian companies operating overseas, saying legislation is not required to make them conform to Australian standards.
He was speaking after international aid group Oxfam accused Australian mining companies of flouting poorly-regulated environmental protection laws of poor countries.
"Lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by the unsafe practices of Australian mining companies who dump toxic waste into rivers and oceans just because the local law allows it,'' Oxfam Australia executive director Andrew Hewett said.
But Mr Macfarlane dismissed the concerns, declaring Australian companies working overseas always operate to the highest standards.
