Sustainability in China and Europe --How our Beliefs about CSR are Sometimes Inaccurate


Even small European enterprises must ensure that their subcontractors in developing countries become active and make an effort to get onboard the sustainability bandwagon. In other words, the working environment in Bangalore, child labour in Bangladesh and human rights in Beijing have become issues to which Danish enterprises must pay keen attention.

No enterprise would like to be made the object of scathing headlines on the cover of national newspapers because their subcontractors in developing countries apply certain hazardous production methods. Considered from the angle of risk management, the case is clear-cut and simple: companies must avoid at any price becoming associated with images of exhausted children labouring under miserable conditions or images of workers whose jobs have ruined their health.

There are also those who take a step further and consider sustainability as something distinct from, and distinctly more than, mere risk management and grooming of corporate image. They believe that sustainability has a demonstrable impact on the bottom line. Sustainability may also be an opportunity for growth.
