Business rubbishes work-families report


A Report showing Australia's intense work focus is destroying families paints an awful picture of working life across the nation, the ACTU says.

But Australia's peak business organisation denies Australians are working longer hours and says the report is based on false information.

The Relationships Forum Australia report, released today, found that over the past 30 years Australia has transformed into "one of the most intensely work-focused, high-income countries in the world".

Around 20 per cent of employees are working 50 hours or more each week while 30 per cent are also regularly working on weekends.

The report, called An Unexpected Tragedy, found long average working hours and night and weekend work have contributed to a large incidence of unhealthy workers, strained personal relationships and poor parenting.
