Executives who thrive on change

Management guru Tom Peters has high praise for Australia’s infrastructure executives. Many of them, he says, display the sort of “metabolic leadership” necessary in today’s rapidly changing business environment.

He defi nes metabolic leadership as the ability to c change the very metabolism of an organisation and “eat change for breakfast”.

Peters, a regular visitor to Australia, says that by nature infrastructure projects are associated with controvers, usually over revenue forecasts, project delays and environmental impact.

“Leaders in these projects must instill a discipline of execution and create a quicktempo, adaptive culture,” says Peters. “They need to have great adaptive skills.”

Peters is an expert on change. He wrote the late-980s classic, Th riving on Chaos, after co-authoring In Search for Excellence with Bob Waterman. His latest book is Re-imagine: Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age.
