Police raid European offices over 'fraud'

Corruption allegations returned to haunt Brussels yesterday after police said they had carried out dawn raids in four countries over possibly fraudulent property deals.

Police in Belgium, Italy, France and Luxembourg swooped on 30 addresses after a three-year operation, the Belgian prosecutor heading the investigation said. Offices at the European Commission and European parliament were raided, as well as company premises and homes. There were no arrests.

The investigation concerns the awarding of contracts to property agents to find buildings to house European Union offices and agencies outside Brussels and the provision of security equipment. Andrew Bounds, Brussels
