Brussels corruption scandal could lead to more arrests

There may be more arrests in a multi-million-euro corruption scandal involving the European Commission, investigators said yesterday.

The Brussels prosecutors' office said police were sifting through mountains of material collected in dawn raids on Monday that could yield fresh evidence.

"We are going through a series of documents that could lead to information against other people," Jos Colpin, a spokesman for the office, told the Financial Times. He said the alleged corruption lasted more than a decade and involved several million euros.

Three arrested Italians - a mid-ranking Commission official, a businessman, and an MEP's researcher - will appear today before a judge who will decide whether to hold them for a further month as police gather more evidence. They are accused of forgery, fraud, bribery and criminal association.
