Staff say 'bonus or bye'


Annual bonuses are becoming more widespread, as companies look for new ways to attract and retain staff in the tight labour market, says Chris Kidd from Robert Walters.

Mr Kidd, the recruitment consultancy's Melbourne director, says bonuses are common in sales and financial services. But he is also seeing them in accounting, the legal sector, and marketing. Mid-level employees in these fields might not bring in additional business but are essential to running an organisation efficiently.

More than 65 per cent of Australian respondents in an online poll by Robert Walters last month said they were unsatisfied with their previous annual bonus, prompting the consultancy's Asia-Pacific CEO Richard Parnell to warn that many employees feel their work is undervalued. He says that while bonuses should be seen as an incentive rather than an expectation, good people who felt their hard work was going unnoticed could look elsewhere.
