ABN AMRO Wins Sustainable Bank of the Year Award

At the Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards, more than 100 banks from around the world competed, and eight banks were singled out, in recognition of their leadership in environmental goals, contributions to sustainable development, achievements in low-carbon finance and, for the first time, achievements in emerging markets.

Dutch bank ABN AMRO won the overall prize for Sustainable Bank of the Year, as well as the Emerging Markets Sustainable Bank of the Year for its operations in India. The U.K.-based Barclays received the runner-up award for Bank of the Year.

The judges for the awards, which was co-created by the Financial Times and the IFC, the private-sector arm of the World Bank, included the Financial Times' business editor John Willman, Lars Thunell, Executive V.P. at the IFC, and other leaders in the sustainable finance and development fields. In commenting on ABN AMRO's win, the judges said in a statement, "We would rather have them than anyone else working on complex transactions. They have aspirational targets. They practice what they preach."
