Selling Yourself by Showing Yourself, in a Good Way


When a fellow writer called me a “master of self-promotion,” my tummy began to rumble. That she added “in the best possible way” did not alleviate my queasiness. Later that day, I told a friend who works in television, and she calmed me.

“Everyone knows authors have to self-promote these days. I am sure she meant it as a compliment.” Still, the word did not sit well with me.

I know why she said it. I had just completed my book tour, and anyone who knew me knew all about my book, “One Person/Multiple Careers” (Warner Business Books), because I sent out frequent e-mail newsletters announcing my coming events and media coverage. I know some people were put off by it; a few even asked to be removed from my mailing list.
