Mind your corporate manners
Robert Miller meets the head of a new firm that keeps shareholders informed on how companies are running their boardrooms
The trials and tribulations of Manchester United Football Club have done wonders for the world of corporate governance. At a stroke the subject has been introduced to millions of football fans, and interest has spread far beyond the game as well.
Strip away the famous players, their agents, manager Sir Alex Ferguson and race-horse owners who also happen to be shareholders, and the bottom line of the club's predicament boils down to this: how do the directors run Manchester United on behalf of the shareholders and is this in line with various City codes of conduct on transparency and openness? Corporate responsibility and governance rolled into one.
Even as Manchester United announced a review of its player transfer deals late last month - after pressure from the club's largest shareholders, JP McManus and John Magnier - the board of directors declared the company's corporate governance "processes and policies are among the most rigorous in football".
