Work and family - time for action
“It is well and truly about time that Australia offered both parents the supports necessary to make it possible for them to effectively combine paid work and parenting, as OECD data show we are lagging well behind most comparable countries,” said Jenny Earle on behalf of the Women’s Electoral Lobby.
“WEL is very pleased that the new HREOC report “It’s About Time: Women, Men, Work and Family” offers governments and employers a comprehensive program of action to increase participation in paid work, women’s equality and family well being.”
The report, if implemented, would vastly improve the ability of women and men to combine paid work with their caring commitments by ensuring good work practices, adequate services and better financial support to the benefit of both families and the wider community. “It even makes economic good sense as it will increase the labour supply at a time when we need the skills and contributions of the widest possible groups,” said WEL chair Eva Cox.
