The Globalization of Giving


The savviest of corporate leaders know that community giving is a good business strategy. As firms grow and do more business overseas, charitable giving has expanded beyond the home base to markets around the globe. US firms seek to develop wealthier client bases in India, China, Latin America or Eastern Europe. Two examples of recent corporate grants, provided by this ChicagoBusiness.com article: Caterpillar working to clean up China’s Yangtze River and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. encouraging recycled materials for low-cost housing in Buenos Aires. Corruption, ineligibility for US tax write-offs and sometimes a lack of local support are among the challenges awaiting firms that donate goods or funds overseas. Still, analysts expect the trend to continue, after the share of US corporate giving leaped by more than 40 percent from 2004 to 2006, according to one survey. – YaleGlobal
