Paying our dues to society


Tax should be seen not as a burden but as a civic duty, writes Clive Hamilton.

Many wealthy Australians have just had the worst weekend of their lives. They are the ones caught up in tax-evasion schemes being investigated by the Federal Government's Operation Wickenby, which took its first scalp with the jailing last Thursday of music promoter Glenn Wheatley.

If they have not already been raided by the Australian Crime Commission, they can expect a knock on the door soon, especially since Wheatley, and probably others, have started spilling the beans on how the schemes work and who is involved.

Despite their crimes, some of the tax cheats may feel a sense of grievance — because for some years our public culture and our political leaders have provided justification for tax shirking.
