Gender equality: a solid business case at last


Gender parity at work is one of those topics guaranteed to polarise opinion, whether at the dinner table or around the executive boardroom table. Most emotive, perhaps, is the fact that, des­pite policies to ensure equal opportunity, widely reported disparities persist.

Proposals for new interventions to address this issue are usually met with the challenge: “Show me the business case.” The topic has been debated for decades with little change in the number of women achieving senior office. In fact, the number of women on the boards of UK publicly listed companies is reported to be falling in the FTSE 100, 250 and 350 (according to Cranfield’s Female FTSE report of 2007 and PwC research, also in 2007).
