Australia third worst of world's polluters: UN
If the rest of the world emitted carbon gases at the same per person rate as Australia, its population would need seven planets to sustain the pollution, according to a damning United Nations report.
Australia is third in per capita emissions to the US and Canada, which would both need to spread the world's people across nine planets.
Released overnight in Brazil, the UN Human Development Program report finds that while rich countries had been largely responsible for causing climate change, the 2.6 billion people who live on less than $US2 a day will be hardest hit by worsening drought, extreme weather and rising sea levels.
It warns there is a danger climate change would reverse generations of work cutting extreme poverty, combating infectious diseases and improving nutrition and education in the developing world.
