In need of zero emissions aircraft

Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the International Air Transport Association (Iata), this year challenged commercial aircraft makers to develop a zero emissions passenger aircraft within 50 years.

The call, an attempt to galvanise the aviation and aerospace industries into action to respond to the growing environmental pressures on air travel, reflects the recognition among airlines that climate change has become a real concern for many air travellers and a political priority for many governments.

The zero emissions aircraft may remain more a vision than a realistic prospect for many years, but Mr Bisignani believes some of the potential building blocks for a carbon-free future are already available, including fuel cell technology, making fuel from biomass, and solar power.
