Making the most of nature's beauty


The State Government's draft nature-based tourism strategy recognises that the private sector has an important role to play in the development of Victoria's tourism industry.

Nature-based tourism is one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors, with 77 per cent of all international tourists doing at least one nature-based activity during their trips.

Victoria has Australia's greatest level of biodiversity, relative to land size, and most natural attractions are within driving distance of Melbourne.

But Victoria's effectiveness with nature-based tourism is patchy at best, with international nature-based tourists staying less time in Victoria (22 nights on average) compared with the rest of Australia (30.9 nights).
