"Values: empty words or a tool for change?"

I have two basic observations about values. The first is that values are like lawyers: You have them whether you want them or not. Surveys have proven that good, bad or a combination of both types of values ALWAYS exist in an organisation, even if they aren’t immediately apparent.

My second observation: Companies that succeed always have strong, clearly-defined values. Cause or effect? Both. So we might as well work hard to live the values that we want!

Here are five questions to ask yourself as you set about defining your organisation’s values:

Is the motivation to define values the right one? Politically- and managerially-correct does exist. There is a real risk of “We need values because everyone has them”. If the motivation is not to improve a corporate culture by changing behaviour (including our own), then values are just a pretext.
