
Succeeding in the Chinese market is of the highest strategic importance for most German multinationals, but human resources issues present the greatest challenge to conducting business there, a new survey finds.
The Watson Wyatt Worldwide survey of 70 Germany-based multinationals, including 17 German Dax 30 firms, with operations in Mainland China and Hong Kong found that 82 percent view China as being of the highest or central strategic importance to their company. About 90 percent of respondents’ China operations are in the growth or start-up phase, with more than one-fourth not yet breaking even.
The study, initiated by Watson Wyatt in Shanghai, found that HR challenges are paramount. HR is by far the most serious business challenges for German multinationals in greater China, with 88 percent listing it as the top concern.
