Green Jobs for Blue Collar Workers
Rust Belt cities are badly in need of an economic transformation as they continue to bleed manufacturing jobs and lose population. Here in Cleveland where IW is located I can walk out the building entrance toward Lake Erie and see a towering wind turbine outside the Great Lakes Science Center near Cleveland Browns Stadium.
And east of downtown The Great Lakes Institute for Energy Innovation at Case Western Reserve University is conducting a feasibility study of putting wind turbines on Lake Erie.
Last week a coalition of union, environmental, government and business leaders convened in Pittsburgh for the Good Jobs, Green Jobs: A National Green Jobs Conference.
The buzz about “green jobs” suggests that manufacturing might not be dead after all in regions hit hard by plant closings. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell seems enthusiastic about the possibilities.
