Individuals Focus of DOJ Corrupt Practices Allegations

The Department of Justice's crackdown on bribes of foreign government officials has led to more criminal charges being filed against corporate executives and at least one U.S. congressman rather than corporations, according to a story published in Financial Week.

Ten individuals were criminally charged last year for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), including sitting congressman William Jefferson (D-LA), who allegedly offered bribes to Nigerian government officials to advance his own business interests - compareable to 10 individual indictments over the previous three years.

The focus on individuals, instead of the companies they work for, looks to be improving the level of compliance and self-disclosure of bribes paid by both U.S. and foreign corporations.
