One in three employees disengaged

Over a third of workers have low commitment to their employer and/or a weak understanding of how they can make a positive contribution, according to a pan-European survey of 14,000 employees by consultants Watson Wyatt. Only 13 per cent of employees rank highly on both commitment and line of sight*, the combination of which creates strong employee engagement and leads to superior performance.

Through a series of questions, Watson Wyatt was able to divide employees into five categories based on their engagement with their organisation. According to the firm, segmenting a company's workforce in this way enables it to understand its people management issues and consequently focus resources that retain the right people and increase their performance.

The 13 per cent who score highly for both commitment and line of sight are the "value creators" and are significantly more likely to be the top performers who contribute substantially to organisational success.
