Women on Boards -- 2008

NewsOnWomen.com reported that February 2008 was a photo image of last February: 27 new women directors from 15 states.

In the race among states, six states had 2 announcements each, New York had 3, Massachusetts and Minnesota had 4 each, with California announcing a total of 8 new women directors. Based on past research, it is a positive trend when we see more announcements from a broader representation of states.

For the first time, we started tracking whether the companies were public stock companies or privately-held. We found that through the end of February, companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) had 16 new women director announcements, the NASDAQ had 14, and private companies (or mutual ownership firms) had 12 announcements. Only one company was traded OTC (over the counter). Thus, about a third of the firms adding women to corporate boards so far this year were among the nation's largest, while two-third were either "new economy" or privately-held firms.
