Global warming before your eyes


Peering out of the viewing windows of the Begich, Boggs Visitor Centre in the Chugach National Forest is one of the best examples of climate change in action you will ever see.

Opened to the public in 1986, the concrete grey building in southern Alaska was once the best platform for viewing the amazing Portage Glacier.

But now there is no glacier in sight.

One hundred years of retreat has seen the gigantic river of ice recede around the bend of the valley and out of view.
