Latin America: Soya – A sustainable miracle?


While Latin America's soya boom races ahead, talks over responsible production are proving painfully slow.

Soya, Latin America's “miracle crop”, is literally changing the landscape of the region. The area of land given to soya fields has more than doubled in the past decade in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. Demand is projected to grow a further 60 per cent over the next 20 years.

In March 2005, a handful of industry leaders and non-profit groups convened a Roundtable on Responsible Soya. With a third meeting just completed, a final set of criteria for responsible soya is not due to be published until May 2009.
