Time for action on climate is now


TOMORROW'S launch of the Garnaut Climate Change report has business jumping at shadows for fear of what may come next but, most importantly, on concerns that the Government won't deliver a balanced policy.

Ironically enough, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should take some comfort in the business fears because they are based on confidence he will deliver on his promise to deliver a carbon trading scheme.

Climate change worrywarts will believe it when they see it.

The hallmark of this Government's short reign has been careful study before jumping into policy responses, but the release of the Garnaut report signals that the time for action is getting closer, which has the lobby groups winding up their fear campaigns.

Come to think of it, the number of so-called hard decisions actually made as of today are thin on the ground, so the business faith in radical change in support of the environment must be music to Rudd's ears. Some in business ask why Australia would give away its comparative advantage in energy for the sake of being environmentally responsible but economically less competitive.
