UK industry "must accelerate green progress"

The environmental performance of industry sectors regulated by the Anglo-Welsh environment agency was "the best on record" in 2007, according to the agency's latest annual "spotlight" report.

The energy-generation and minerals sectors achieved the best environmental results last year, with 72 per cent of sites achieving the top "A" rating. The waste and textiles sectors were the poorest performers, with 43 and 27 per cent of sites respectively achieving a rating of either D or E, the lowest possible.

The agency also assesses industry's green performance in the decade since its first spotlight report was published. Sectors covered since 1998 have cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by four per cent and reduced waste generation by 14 per cent. They have also cut releases of sulphur oxides, fine particles, dioxins and volatile organic compounds by more than a half.
