
When Elwanda Young worked at a nonprofit in Queens, N.Y., all at once she was the president, chef and janitor.
She joked about it in a large conference room full of professionals who volunteer in one capacity or another. Everyone laughed, though it's hardly a laughing matter. And they all know it.
Young, now the chief operating officer for United Way of America in New York City, spoke to a crowd at Deloitte & Touche's annual "IMPACT" Day June 6. The day is reserved by the consulting and accounting firm so its 40,000-plus employees throughout the country can dedicate their working hours to its philanthropic endeavors, one of which is called "skills-based" volunteerism.
