Concrete Jungle: Are Cities Good for the Climate?


Cities are places of experimentation and could be the testing grounds for bold new climate initiatives. Shining examples are still few and far between, but sociologist Fritz Reusswig says there is plenty of potential.

From this year, more than half the world's population is now living in cities. Is this good news for the climate?

I don't know if it's really good news. Cities, almost by definition, consume more and have high emissions. About two thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions come from cities. But if you change the emission structure in a city, which is difficult but possible, you could reduce emissions greatly by addressing only small spots on the planet.
