Australia sets sights on 15% carbon cut


Australia, the developed world’s biggest per capita carbon emitter, pledged on Monday to cut emissions by up to 15 per cent from 2000 levels by 2020.

Dubbing the new push the most important structural reform to the economy in a generation, Kevin Rudd, the prime minister, said the target was appropriate as the government balanced the need to tackle climate change with supporting the economy during the global slowdown.

“We will be attacked from the far right for taking any action at all. We will be attacked from parts of the left for not going far enough by refusing to close down Australia’s coal industry,” Mr Rudd said. “The government believes we have got the balance right.”
