Energy plan approved in EU compromise


The European Union has agreed a plan to increase its use of renewable energy as diplomats scrambled to narrow differences on other elements of a vast climate package before Thursday’s meeting of heads of state in ­Brussels.

Under Tuesday’s agreement, the EU will commit itself to generating at least 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, such as wind and biofuels, by 2020.
