BAA wants 'greener' third runway

The owners of Heathrow airport today called on government to set up an independent body with the power to limit flights for environmental reasons, if a third runway is approved.

BAA pledged support for a body to monitor the noise and air quality impact of a third runway, on the condition that airport expansion is granted.

BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said that the airport would only increase the number of flights if they could operate within environmental limits set by government.

Matthews told BBC Radio 4: "Our position is that it is really important for London, for the country, that it has a hub – that is Heathrow - with the right capacity to keep the nation directly connected to the rest of the world."
