Dale Vince: UFOs, alternative energy and money
Dale Vince OBE, 46, is the founder of alternative energy supplier Ecotricity. One of his wind turbines lost a 65ft propeller this week, prompting speculation that it had been hit by a UFO – but a lump of ice from a passing plane is more likely.
What should people facing rising energy costs do?
Use less. Do the obvious things like making sure your light bulbs are all low-energy, draught-exclude windows and doors and turn computers and TVs off when you're not using them. I think we all need to learn new behaviour when it comes to technology.
It's not a good idea to leave DVD players and TVs on standby because they slowly drain power. We have been brought up to depend on energy at the flick of a switch and we don't care enough about how we waste it.
What have you done in your home to save energy?
Three years ago we moved to a four-bedroom stone house in Stroud and I decided to treat it as an object lesson in affordable green renovations. There is a lot you can do that will never pay for itself, so I only did the things that will make enough difference. I spent around £8,500 and slashed our energy and water use by half.
