Australia Builds CCS Foundation for Long-Term Advantage

Australia is expected to be a hub of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology demonstration and commercialization over the next decade. Financing CCS projects in 2009 hangs in the balance: Australia’s political will to advance multiple large-scale projects will be tested by the global economic crisis, which has drained the government’s funds. The most significant opportunities for CCS build-out in Australia will arise post-2020, as the country’s aging coal plants are expected to be politically unacceptable by this time.
