Carbon Capture Power Plant Development Rankings: Trends and Review

Globally there are 65 carbon capture projects in the power sector representing approximately 16 GW of capacity at some stage of development as of year-end 2008; this figure is up slightly from 2007, despite the worsening economic climate. As carbon capture development activity increases, weaker projects and developers are shaken out of the pipeline; over 90% of projects are backed by utilities, large IPPs, or upstream energy companies. The carbon capture technology supply market is becoming highly competitive: more than 25 capture technologies promoted by more than 20 vendors have been tapped for a pilot- or demonstration-scale capture project in the power sector.
