EU plots further changes to Weee legislation
The European Commission is planning to amend a list of substances and components which must be removed from waste electronic equipment for separate disposal or recovery under the 2002 Weee directive).
The commission argues that the list, which appears in an annex to the directive, has become "outdated" and that some entries should be removed and new substances or components added, according to a consultation document recently sent to EU member states.
Any changes to the list will be proposed through the EU's comitology procedure, the commission says. This will be quicker than trying to agree the changes through an ongoing recast of the Weee directive, it adds. MEPs and governments are not due to begin discussions on the recast until after EU elections are held this summer.
