In the lead up to Copenhagen, it’s worth asking where public opinion is on climate change. And if it isn’t fully onside, what are the reasons? Are people simply overloaded with the warnings of disaster?
A recent poll by the Lowy Institute found that climate change is less of a priority now for Australians. Back in 2007, it was ranked as the equal most important foreign policy goal and now it has slipped to seventh spot. It’s down 10 points since last year and 19 points since 2007. Significantly, this trend is also reflected in overseas polls.
