Access to electricity and modern energy services are basic requirements for human development. Yet worldwide, about 2 billion people have no access to modern energy services.
They rely instead on traditional and non-commercial biomass - wood, agricultural residues and dung - for cooking and space conditioning. These practices often have severe adverse effects on health, environment, and social and economic conditions, thus contributing to the perpetuation of poverty and degradation.
Low access to electricity and modern energy services is particularly common in rural areas, where poor and dispersed populations make national grid extension costly and unprofitable. In these situations, renewable energy technologies (RETs) can offer a viable alternative. RETs utilize wind, solar, small-scale hydropower and biomass resources - energy sources that do not deplete the Earth´s natural resources and do not create added waste products - to generate electricity or provide modern energy services.
