Airlines, airports and aviation regulators in the U.S. and Europe have found inexpensive ways to cut fuel consumption, carbon emissions and flight times by cooperating more effectively on air-traffic management, officials involved in a trans-Atlantic study said.
By carefully planning flight paths and improving communication among air controllers, carriers and airports, major airlines should be able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 2%—or many thousands of tons—on flights between America and Europe, the analysis indicates. Carbon-dioxide emissions are directly related to the volume of fuel burned, so greater efficiency proportionally decreases production of the greenhouse gas.
