International Women's Day Is No Laughing Matter


Forget the pep rally, Mr. President, and get down to business on effecting real change

At 4:30 p.m. on Monday President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated International Women's Day with a White House reception honoring global women. "Today, Michelle and I remember, celebrate and honor the sacrifices, talents and leadership of women around the world," Obama said in a released statement. At the reception, he described the ascent of women as "an upward curve."

The theme of this year's International Women's Day--which marks its 100th anniversary this March 8--is Equal Right, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All. A fitting tune to be sung by the Obamas, the first black chief executive and first lady and parents of two young daughters, Sasha and Malia.
