Women in Mining: A Guide to Integrating Women into the Workforce

IFC and Lonmin Plc have published a guide to help mining companies incorporate women into the workforce and create a culture that recruits and retains them.

Women in Mining provides a conceptual framework and a step-by-step approach to integrating women into mining and other extractive and heavy industries. It also shows how companies can increase the benefits that women and their families receive from these industries.

Lonmin, a South Africa-based platinum producer with women comprising 6.8 percent of its workforce, has embarked on a major effort to make its operations better suited to women. With IFC's support, the company has built female-only change houses and issued mining equipment specially designed for women, among other innovations.
