Water and farmers
Agriculture is the biggest user of water in most countries. Worldwide, it accounts for about 70% of freshwater used. In OECD countries, where industrial and household demand is higher than in many developing countries, the share of water used on farms is lower but still in excess of 40%.
As the chart below shows, that share has risen only very slightly in the OECD area since the early 1990s, although there are big variations between countries: In some, such as Turkey, it rose substantially; in others, such as the Czech Republic, it fell.
