Governments must tackle rising youth unemployment urgently, says OECD's Gurría


“The short-term labour market outlook is not rosy”, said Secretary-General Angel Gurría at the G20 Labour Ministerial in Washington D.C. "Ensuring that high unemployment does not persist for too long is a key objective." Read the full speech here.

In a separate report, the OECD estimates that unemployment among young people is set to keep rising in the months ahead and stay at the same high double digit level across the OECD to the end of 2011. “Many unemployed youth are likely to experience a prolonged period of joblessness.”

Youth unemployment rates in Europe will remain close to 20% well into 2011, according to forecasts based on the OECD’s November 2009 Economic Outlook.
