
The Army is to get environmentally friendly bullets as part of the first redesign of its standard ammunition in half a century.
BAE Systems is to develop the new ammunition after concerns from service personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq that existing bullets are not deadly enough.
Nato’s forces fire a standard 5.56mm calibre round, which British troops use in their SA80 rifles. The bullet is of traditional construction — a steel tip, lead core and copper jacket. The new bullet will be lead-free with a steel core, removing the potential for lead pollution.
