
A study conducted in part by Rice University has found that tighter auditing standards imposed on public companies to improve the accuracy of annual earnings reports actually lead to more errors in those reports.
The longer time necessary to comply with the new standards leads most companies to release their reports before the audit is complete, the study concludes.
