The world needs to reduce carbon intensity by around 88% by 2050 to stabilise atmospheric carbon concentrations at 450ppm CO2e and limit climate change to two degrees of warming.

Starting in 2000, the global economy would have needed to decarbonise by around 2% a year each year until 2020 to get onto a low carbon pathway.

PwC’s analysis shows the progress of the major economies in reducing carbon intensity. The average rate of decarbonisation between 2000 and 2008 was around 0.8%. In 2009, the carbon intensity fell by around 0.7%. The world now a year until 2020, to keep to the 450ppm target.
